New Year, New Me: How to Stick to Your Goals On PMS

Well, here we are – one month into the new year already.  Many of us probably started off 2016 with a declaration of “New Year, New Me!”  But one month in, it might be difficult to keep those great goals from slipping, especially if you’re experiencing PMS symptoms.  Don’t give up hope just yet!

Stick With It

It takes 21 days of repeating an action to make it into a habit.  Whether your goal is to establish an exercise routine or eat more vegetables every day, try keeping a record of your progress.  Keep a list or a calendar where you can note every day that you stick with your goals.  You can post the list somewhere visible, like on your fridge door, to remind yourself of how far you’ve come.  Those 21 days will pass before you know it and New You will have achieved a new goal.

Keep It Positive

Everyone slips up!  It’s hard not to fall victim to a bad day, especially if you’re dealing with PMS.  Rather than beating yourself up for missing a workout, take a moment to congratulate yourself on something positive.  As you’re getting ready for bed, think about everything you’ve actually accomplished for the day.  Drifting off to sleep with positive thoughts will help improve your outlook for the next day.

Be Patient

Remember that everything happens gradually.  That big weight loss change or revamped healthy lifestyle isn’t going to happen overnight.  It’s always tempting to focus on the results that we want, but those results won’t happen unless we focus on the process of change.      

At the end of the day, it’s all about mental motivation.  If you’re feeling discouraged because of stress or PMS or just a bad day, think about why you set these goals in the first place.  Ride your mental motivation to success and kiss those obstacles goodbye!
