PMS Relief: Hacking Hormones

September 08, 2015

Hormone and blood sugar balance are the keys to reducing PMS symptoms for good. Here are some tips and tricks for hacking your hormones and taking control of your month.

Eat more often
Good news for those of you who love to chew! Eat small and often. When you starve yourself or skip meals, your blood sugar levels and metabolism become totally out of whack and adrenaline is released into your body, causing anxiety and irritability. Keep hormone levels consistent by planning your meals and having a healthy snack stash in your bag, desk, and car.

Lose the caffeine
Caffeine is a diuretic and can deplete your body of necessary vitamins and minerals that help with hormone balance. Caffeine also causes your blood sugar levels to rise quickly and crash and stimulates your adrenal glands. We can all agree that when we are PMSing, the last thing we need is surging adrenaline and a lack of nutrients.

Decaf coffee still contains some caffeine. Switch out your morning cup of joe for a fresh pressed green juice for sustainable energy throughout the day. Try it for a week and record how you feel.

Reduce or eliminate sugar
White, processed sugar and refined carbohydrates spike your blood sugar levels fast and then drop, leaving you crashing and irritable.

Find healthy alternatives that you crave, enjoy, and feel no regret. Sometimes fruit just doesn’t cut it. If you love ice cream, try this vegan and paleo ice cream at home. If you love chocolate bars try one of my favorites Pure 7 sweetened with honey. If you love brownies or chocolate truffles, dig in and try PMS Bites, delivered to your door when you need it most!

Try these amazing alternatives to carbs. Brown rice pasta, Ezekiel bread, gluten-free English muffins.

Meditate
Stress is the biggest trigger for PMS symptoms. When life is crazy and hectic, it’s so difficult to not fall into the trap of reacting to and worrying about everything around you. Similar to training your body at the gym or yoga studio, you have train your mind to manage stress.

“Mindfulness is the intention to be present in the here and now, fully engaged in whatever is happening, free from distraction or judgement, with a soft and open mind.”

“Meditation is the simple exercise to familiarize oneself with the qualities of mindfulness. It is a way of providing the optimum conditions for training the mind to be calmer, clearer and kinder.”

Meditation is a sure-fire way to managing stress. I meditate for 20 minutes in the morning and then 20 minutes before I go to bed using Headspace*. I used to worry if I would have time to meditate. Now, I see that meditation primes my mind for a happier, more productive day. It's the reason why I have more time and less stress.

*Headspace provides you with a complimentary 10 day trial period. When you're hooked, Google "headspace promo code" for their latest discount.
