April is National Stress Awareness Month: What Are You Doing for You?

We spend a lot of time doing things for other people.  Between family, work colleagues, teachers, significant others - and the list goes on - stress levels can pile up to dangerous levels.  It’s difficult to find time in our busy schedules to take care of ourselves.  And when we’re PMS-ing or on our period, it can be even harder to manage stress.  In light of National Stress Awareness Month, we’ve put together some tips to help you manage your stress, even in times of extreme PMS emotions.


Budget Your Time

One of the worst feelings when you’re stressed out is the feeling of being completely overwhelmed, with not enough time to get everything done that you need to accomplish.  Prioritize your to-do list and create a realistic schedule for yourself, whether on a daily or weekly basis.  And don’t forget to pencil in time for yourself every day, to relax or meditate or even just get to sleep earlier.

Know When to Say No  

We’re taught to have an “I can do everything” mentality.  Women try to have it all by taking on a ton of responsibility in every facet of their life.  And while it’s good to have a full, fulfilling life, everybody has a limit.  Know yours, and know when you need to just say no to the next request that crosses your path.

Stick to Healthy Foods

Many of us tend to reach for comfort food in times of stress, and sometimes we binge-eat without realizing it.  Filling your body with refined sugars will only increase your stress, especially on your period.  Try to also avoid nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol.  Stimulants will increase your stress, and depressants like alcohol can cause roller-coaster stress emotions depending on how much you consume.   

Unmanaged stress can be dangerous, taking a physical toll on your body anywhere from headaches to ulcers to panic attacks.  And women have an increased chance of high stress levels at least monthly, thanks to PMS.  By becoming aware of your own stress and stressors, you can take steps to manage your stress and live a healthier, happier life.
